Influencer vs. Content Creator: what’s the real difference?
In the increasingly vast and dynamic landscape of social media, the terms “influencer” and “content creator” are often used interchangeably. In reality, they represent two different figures, with distinct objectives and working methods. Understanding the differences between them is essential for those working in communications, especially when choosing the most suitable profile for a specific strategy.
Who is the Content Creator?
The content creator is an author of original content (videos, photos, texts, podcasts) designed to inform, entertain, or inspire. His/her priority is not sponsorship, but the quality of the content, creativity, and narrative consistency. When collaborating with a brand, he/she does so by integrating the message into a storytelling that remains true to his/her own identity.
In short, the content creator focuses on the story and aims to build a community that appreciates his/her style, not a product.
An effective example is YouTuber Alessandro Della Giusta, who has a loyal following for his investigative and travel content, characterized by an authentic and narrative style.
Who is the Influencer?
The influencer, on the other hand, bases his/her role on the ability to influence opinions and behaviors. Thanks to a strong reputation and a direct relationship with his/her followers, he/she is often involved in brand projects to promote products and services in a more immediate and recognizable way.
It is a more ‘vertical’ figure: sponsorship is at the heart of his/her strategy, sometimes across multiple sectors, with the aim of generating conversions, visibility, and trust.
A prime example is Giulia De Lellis, who has transformed her online and television presence into a solid personal brand, becoming the face of high-value campaigns.
An evolving distinction
The difference between influencers and content creators remains clear in terms of roles, but in practice the boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred: many creators are becoming influencers and many influencers are investing in the production of increasingly polished content. For brands, the real skill today is knowing how to recognize who does what and choosing the most effective figure to reach their audience in an authentic and strategic way.
